Why choose the North West Teacher Training Partnership?

The North West Partnership, led by Saint Wilfrid’s, is a school based Initial Teacher Training programme, consisting of exceptionally strong partner schools who have a long and very successful track record of working together to deliver high quality school based teacher training in the local area.  Our small partnership of schools in and around Blackburn, Chorley, Leyland and Preston have not only trained many outstanding teachers in recent years, but have also employed many of them in our schools.

Our training programme will not only enable you to secure Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a PGCE from the University of Cumbria, with 60 Masters level credits, it will also provide you with opportunities to attend training events delivered across the partnership so that you can broaden your own school experience. The main purpose of our alliance is to secure and promote quality entrants to the profession with an edge in their field, to facilitate high quality placements and to offer bespoke training opportunities according to your needs and interests.  If you accept the offer of a place on our School Direct programme we will ensure that you have opportunities to work with outstanding practitioners who are committed to securing outstanding outcomes for you.

What are we looking for in a candidate?

We are looking to recruit talented candidates with the qualities and attributes to be successful teachers in a secondary school setting. The personal qualities we are looking for are:

  • Graduates with a passion for their subject, who have an ability to communicate this to engage and inspire our learners;
  • People with good organisational and time management skills combined with a sense of humour, resilience and energy;
  • Reflective practitioners who have the ability to step back and understand the impact of their behaviours on others and adapt when necessary;
  • Creative and innovative problem solvers who see each challenge as a positive opportunity;
  • Potential leadership capabilities.

Eligibility & the application process 

  • Our 2016-17 entry requirements for our School Direct programme are as follows:
  • Preferably a first or second class honours degree (or equivalent) from a UK university;
  • Minimum of C grade GCSEs in English Language, Mathematics or standard equivalent;
  • Preferably an A level in your chosen subject;
  • Recent observation experience in a school.

You are required to undertake Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy prior to entry to an Initial Teacher Training programme. Successful completion of the Professional Skills Tests will form part of the conditions of any offer of a place.

If you accept a formal offer of a place you will also be required to meet the Department for Education’s standards for physical and mental fitness to teach and clearance to work with children. Further information, including a Declaration of Health questionnaire and details of how to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS, previously CRB) Enhanced Disclosure will be sent to you after you have firmly accepted an offer.

Subject enhancement courses are available for some secondary subjects. If your degree subject does not link to your chosen teaching subject, we can help you to arrange to undertake a subject knowledge enhancement course before you begin your training.


Maths, English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, Religious Education and Modern Foreign Languages (French with German or French with Spanish)

Recruitment for September 2017 will commence at the end of October 2016 when the UCAS Teacher Training website opens. Places will be offered on a first-come first-served basis so you are advised to submit your application as soon as possible.

Suitable applicants will be sent further details of our recruitment programme and invited to a half-day interview at one of our partner schools once their application has been assessed.
