God and Community/Fellowship

"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing."
1 Thessalonians 5:11

As a foundation for this half term, we remember that God is love. To know you are loved by God is a great foundation and confidence for your life. Our expression of love for others reflects this love of God to us. This week we will consider how we can demonstrate love to others. Remembering back, love is expressed in different ways – philia, eros, storge and agape. All love, but in different contexts.

The Bible has a lot to say about love. When Jesus called his disciples, he made sure they knew about the importance of love. Here are some of his words to them:

“A new command I give you: Love one another.

As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35

There is a phrase that is used in PE at Saint Wilfrid’s that challenges us all to enter into healthy competition. It is possible to strive to be the best and to do your best, as well as show love to others. It is not the Christian way, to allow others to overtake you and beat you – because you want to love them. But we strive to win with dignity (not being proud and rude to others) and lose with grace (remembering that God loves us no matter what!).

There are so many ways we can contribute to the health and the body of Saint Wilfrid’s. Firstly, we can recognise that we all have a part to play. The House System is open to all. Everyone can raise money for our school charities. The Wilfridian award and the Wilfridian Next Level award, are designed to recognise the great things that all students can complete on their journey through year 7 and 8.

Today, let’s make it our collective commitment to get involved in all we can this year, as we strive to live life to the full. As we attend House events, work towards our goals, let us encourage each other, as we build a strong community, where everyone is encouraged and built up.

What is your response?
As you read the devotional, set some time aside to ask God how the word can change you today.
James 1:22 says "Do not merely listen to the word...do what it says." How can you live out the challenges set, or share the encouragement from the post today?
