God is Creator

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters."
Genesis 1:1-2

“Happy New Year!” How many times have you said that, and had that said to you over the past week? I suppose that depends on what your happiness is dependent on. I hope that you have had a relaxing and peaceful Christmas time and are feeling refreshed and ready for a new term. I hope that you and your family are well and that your friendships are strong and flourishing.

But life is not always peaceful, health-full and flourishing. In those moments, we can see a glimpse of what it was like in the beginning.

“Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep,”

December the 21st is the shortest day in the UK. The sun rises at 08:25 and sets at 15:51; that’s 7 hours and 26 minutes our of a possible 24 hours of light, just 27.5% of the day. Compare this to the 21st June where the sun rises at 04:39 and sets at 21:44. That’s a total of 17 hours and 5 minutes of light. That’s 71% of the day.

There is a light, there is a hope, there is a peace that can be found today. We read about it in the next verse:

“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”

This is the basis of our mission statement at Saint Wilfrid’s and I would encourage you to reflect on this at the start of this new year.

"St Wilfrid’s Church of England Academy sees education as an integral part of the mission of the Church to proclaim God as Creator, Christ as Redeemer and the Holy Spirit as Inspirer of all that is good in human living.

The main purpose of the Academy is to provide an excellent education, both academic and social, in a Christian context, to enable its students to grow up to take their full part as citizens of this world and the next."

What is your response?
As you read the devotional, set some time aside to ask God how the word can change you today.
James 1:22 says "Do not merely listen to the word...do what it says." How can you live out the challenges set, or share the encouragement from the post today?
