Love in Action

"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. And the greatest of these is love."
1 Corinthians 13:13

"And yet I will show you the most excellent way.

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."

As we take time to reflect this week, let us pause to consider the way of love. Often used as a wedding reading, the truth of these words can be a guide to our steps each and every day.

I don’t know how you have been this last week, but my observations have been that, as I walk around the building, I see groups of students and staff coming together and expressing love in different ways. For some (you know who you are), the brew room has never seen so many sugary snacks. For others, the tissues have been in regular supply. Some have sought prayer as comfort, others have spent time with and for others. For some students, a convincing performance and win on the football field has been a strong bond between them.

In all of these expressions, we have seen ‘Love in action’.

Let us use the words of 1 Corinthians 13 to remember what love is, what love does, and that love remains.
